What does your job involve?
I work in the Centre for Lifelong Learning at The University of Liverpool. Although my job is very varied and I am involved with lots of different projects across the institution, my main piece of work has been the development of the My Liverpool resource. This is a website signposting students to all of the activities and opportunities on offer to help them meet new people, develop skills and make the most of their time at university. My daily tasks vary a lot too, from keeping the website updated, and conducting research with students to promoting My Liverpool at Open Days. I’ve also been involved with filming and editing videos, creating online tutorials and helping with the design of posters and flyers.
How did your course prepare you for your job?
My course gave me key skills that I’ve needed for this job such as written and verbal communication skills, time-management and organisation. It also gave me an awareness of the nuances of communicating with different groups of people which has been very important in my current role. I’ve had the opportunity to do some research so doing a dissertation and other essays in my undergraduate degree gave me good experience of the research process.
What are your top tips for students wanting to work in your field?
I would say that you have to have an interest in developing the student experience to work in my role as that is at the heart of the work I do. Getting involved with lots of activities whilst at university, such as student representation or joining a society, helps give you that edge when applying for jobs, and in my case gave me real insight into the area I’d be working to develop as part of my first job.
What was your best experience of studying at Liverpool?
My experience of studying at The University of Liverpool was fantastic, and was made by having such wonderful and supportive lecturers. I felt like I was a real part of the Communication and Media Department and received so much support in my degree and career development. I liked the range of modules there was to choose from so I could really tailor my degree to suit myself. All of my modules were very interesting and exceptionally well taught; they included such diverse themes as American Independent Cinema, literacy in society and gender and the media. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of my course!
