University of Liverpool and NSG Group

Partnership with one of the world’s largest manufacturers of glass and glazing systems

The University of Liverpool and NSG Group have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in place to explore opportunities for collaboration further, with a strong focus on digital materials discovery to address key challenges, including sustainability.

The agreement builds on a longstanding partnership between the two organisations who have worked together for more than 15 years on a range of research topics including furnace performance optimisation, solar cells, antimicrobial coatings and more recently work to accelerate materials discovery in partnership with the University of Liverpool’s Materials Innovation Factory (MIF). Here is an example case study - ‘Applying digital tools to accelerate R&D’.

In addition to research collaborations, NSG Group are partners in two University of Liverpool Doctoral Training Centres, the CDT in Next-Generation Materials Chemistry led by Professor Matt Rosseinsky and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training – Distributed Algorithms led by Professor Simon Maskell.

The MoU was signed in 2023 at a ceremony in the MIF where the award of an Honorary Visiting Professorship to Professor Su Varma, NSG Group Academic Director of the R&D Incubator, was also celebrated.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool, said: “It is an honour to formalise and enhance our partnership with NSG Group and I am delighted to sign the MoU here in the Materials Innovation Factory, which represents our research power and embodies collaborative research and working with industry. We look forward to exploring new opportunities for collaboration and celebrating the achievements of our partnership.”

Mike Greenall, NSG Group Chief Technology Officer, said: “As we enter this new chapter of our partnership, we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. We believe that the combination of our industrial expertise and the university’s academic excellence will enable us to develop cutting-edge solutions that can address the challenges of our time. From improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions to developing new materials and technologies using the latest digital science, we are confident that together we can make a positive impact on the world.

“The partnership shows a commitment to the values of openness, collaboration, and progress that define our shared vision of the future.”
