Pay scales for junior doctors and dentists in training
In August 2016 the NHS implemented a new contract in England for junior doctors and dentists in training; i.e. those in training between Foundation year 1 up to the achievement of the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
The key changes were
- The introduction of a new scale for basic pay
- The ending of NHS banding supplement payments, but with a new system of unsocial hours payments being introduced, known as an NHS work schedule supplement
- The introduction of various categories of pay premia, including an academic pay premium.
A small number of clinical academic trainees (applicable to trainees who were at ST3 and above on 2 August 2016) are paid on the UCEA-maintained post-2009 clinical lecturer scale.
The current salary scale for doctors and dentists in training can be found on the NHS Employers website.
A national training number is a requirement for payment on either pay scale.
