2023
Theme
Reassessing Assessment.
Keynote Speaker
Joanna Tai, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University.
Brief Description
The theme encompassed new approaches, perspectives, and research in the area of assessment and feedback, particularly in the context of new ideas around assessment authenticity and non-disposable assessment. Since the pandemic, assessment practices evolved, and so it was essential to consider what had been learned, what should be retained, and how to continue developing new concepts of assessment.
2022
Theme
Student Inclusion and Belonging.
Keynote Speaker
Dr Julie Hulme, Reader in Psychology at Keele University.
Brief Description
Students’ experience of loneliness and a lack of ‘belonging’ to their University environment has been well documented since the start of the pandemic (Arslan, 2021; ONS, 2021). A combination of national and local lock downs, combined with the pivot to online teaching in 2019 and 2020 has left students with limited opportunities to build relationships with their peers and Faculty members. This has had a damaging effect on students’ mental health and experience of University.
2021
Theme
Reflect, Revise and Reimagine.
Keynote Speaker
Virna Rossi, Ravensbourne University London, UK.
Co-Presenters
Charles Wachira (Director of Teaching & Learning, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, USA), Nokuthula Vilakati (Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching, University of Cape Town, Eswatini), Cassandra R. Stevenson (York University, Canada), Alice S. N. Kim (Managing Director of Teaching and Learning Research In Action, Canada) and Camille Dickson-Deane (Senior Lecturer Higher Education Learning Design at UTS, Australia).
Brief Description
The conference included over 40 submissions from staff across the University demonstrating how they have adapted to the challenges of hybrid learning and adapted their teaching practice to support students in learning & teaching.
It also offered an opportunity to reflect upon and explore wellbeing in the curriculum within the University. Attendees considered how to embed wellbeing within curriculum design and collaborated with fellow attendees to design specific learning and teaching activities.
2020

Students As Partners.
Keynote Speaker
Dr Catherine Bovill, Senior Lecturer in Student Engagement at the Institute for Academic Development, University of Edinburgh.
Brief Description
Dr Catherine Bovill discussed her work on the co-creation in learning and teaching: the case for a whole-class approach in higher education.
We also hosted an exciting crime mystery through our new VLE, Canvas! This involved learning about Students as Partners (SaP) and its potential benefits and implications. In addition, discovering and trying various valuable tools in Canvas.
2019
Theme
Inspire, Educate, Connect.
Keynote Speaker
Professor Ruth Pickford, Director of Learning and Teaching at Leeds Beckett University.
Brief Description
The conference was an opportunity to share good practice from around the University of Liverpool and beyond, raising awareness of the excellent teaching taking place, and providing a forum for staff to present new ideas on learning, teaching and assessment for discussion with fellow practitioners.
This year, CIE hosted a “fringe” event on the second day of the conference. We developed a games-informed learning day called The Curriculum Maze, based on a well-known maze-based gameshow!
