Assessment remains one of the biggest challenges for both staff and students in higher education. Staff may find it difficult to embrace new assessment formats due to difficulties with implementation, concerns regarding academic integrity or pressure regarding grade inflation. Students may struggle to see the relevance of particular assessments to their studies, find marking criteria unclear and have difficulty understanding how to use feedback to improve their performance. In response to these ongoing issues, CIE chose to focus on assessment at the 2023 learning and teaching conference.
The theme encompassed new approaches, perspectives, and research in the area of assessment and feedback, particularly in the context of new ideas around assessment authenticity and non-disposable assessment. Since the pandemic, assessment practices evolved, and so it was essential to consider what had been learned, what should be retained, and how to continue developing new concepts of assessment.
Day 1 featured ignite sessions, workshops, and roundtables from colleagues across the University, covering a wide range of topics within the assessment theme. For full details on the program, please refer to our LT Conference booklet. During lunch, posters and slideshows from staff and students, as well as projects and displays, were displayed. The day began at 9:30 with a keynote from Joanna Tai, a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University.
Day 2 was an online collaborative experience hosted on SpatialChat from 12:00-14:30 on the 14th of July. A revamped version of the global event, the 'Islands of Innovation', was shared. This was an exercise in creativity, teamwork, and imagination. For more details, please refer to our webpage on the most recent iteration of the Islands.
