In collaboration with experts across the globe, the project responded to this unusual situation using research and experience from a wide range of academics and practitioners. It outlined important areas of focus such as stress, resilience and decision making, offering resources and helpful guidance for NHS staff and other front-line responders.
The approach for this educational resource was to help front-line clinical workers prepare for, adapt to, and recover in light of these unprecedented times. The project was based on the strategies and academic expertise used in critical incidents because of their relevance to the issues caused by the pandemic. This helped address the psychological challenges of high stakes and time pressure, balanced against the need to make decisions in novel and uncertain settings.
Core deliverables
- The production of practitioner-focused content, drawing on existing resources and current operating environments
- Creating a resource format to suit the needs and busy schedules of front-line practitioners, while ensuring that key lessons are shared and communicated in an effective and manageable manner. As a result, content was designed to be read on the move; during a short break; whilst commuting; or as a reference for quick tips and recommendations
- The production of video content (outlining ways to consider emerging challenges), audio interviews (sharing experiences of practitioners facing similar environments) and short aide-memoires (providing summaries of key takeaways and tips relevant to specific areas).
University impact
- This content has been shared and made available to practitioners and organisations around the world
- It has been included in guidance for students on various courses to further expose them to some of the challenges ahead
- Components of the project have been further adapted and tailored to assist specific organisations and institutions.
