New LIV.INNO PhD studentships available for a 2024 start

A new set of LIV.INNO PhD studentships have been approved for students to start their studies in October 2024 at both the University of Liverpool (UoL) and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). A total of eight new positions at UoL and two at LJMU are now available.

The positions available cover research in the three work package areas of Monte Carlo and High Performance Computing (WP1), Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (WP2) and Data Analysis (WP3). Topics of study include accelerator physics, particle physics and astrophysics as well as quantum computing, nuclear physics and the use of art recognition techniques to classify urban landscapes.

These PhDs are fully funded, half by STFC who are funding the LIV.INNO centre and half by another partner. They are funded for 48 months and include extensive training in data science and the subject of the PhD.

As part of the LIV.INNO CDT these PhDs also come with extensive additional training. In their first year, students will study several data science modules as well as modules specific to their topic of research. They will also attend a one-week skills school that will cover topics like project management, presentation skills and science communication. In subsequent years, schools on data science applications and data science in healthcare will be taken as well as a skills school in their final year that will prepare students for their first roles in industry or academia after their PhDs.

Students must undertake a 6-month placement with an industrial partner as part of their PhD. This gives the student an excellent opportunity to apply their data science skills to real world challenges, whilst gaining knowledge and experience of working outside of academia. There are already many industrial partners in the LIV.INNO project and they are a vital part of its success.
