The School of Chemistry has hosted the annual Salters Festival of Chemistry sponsored by the Salters’ Institute and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
This years’ event, which has been running in Liverpool since 2003, was held for the first time in the Central Teaching Labs and saw teams from sixteen schools in Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and Lancashire attending a full day of chemistry, taking part in two practical challenges and attending a lecture-demonstration.
Dr Helen Aspinall from the School, one of the organisers of the event, said: "The theme this year, ‘The body in the classroom’ was a challenge for the budding Year 7 and 8 chemists."
Body in the staff room
The Headteacher at Saltersgate School made himself unpopular with his staff by introducing a whole series of new rules and regulations. So when his body was found in the staff room, and it was clear that he had been murdered, there was no shortage of suspects.
The schoolchildren were set the challenge of identifying chemicals found on the suspects and at the crime scene, and using this evidence together with witness statements to identify the killer.
St Joseph's Catholic & Anglican High School, Wrexham, won the morning competition, and The Blue Coat School, Liverpool, won the afternoon competition.
