Live Music Event and International Touring Workshop Series

Do you have an interest in the live music industry?

Do you enjoy live music events and festivals and want to know more about how they work behind the scenes?

Do you want the first-hand experience from a UoL graduate's journey into running a music promotions company internationally?

The workshop series

This workshop series is open to all students and graduates from any subject area, who would like an insight into the live music events and international touring industry. Students will work in groups to work on a challenge and pitch an enterprising solution.  

The workshops will be delivered by our Alumni, Dani Molina Morales, who now owns his own international music promotions company Just Life Music

The workshop series is also HEAR Accredited.

Workshop 1: Introduction to the Music Business 

  • From university to the industry: How to make it in live music
  • Who is who in the live music business: From managers to promoters via booking agencies
  • How to effectively reach your audience: Relationships among record labels, PR agencies, promoters and media
  • Live on the road: Tour Managers, Producers, crew
  • Big corporation’s vs independent promoters: From Live Nation, AEG and OCESA to small pub shows. From global tours to local promoters operating in secondary markets. 

Workshop 2: Economics

  • Financial concepts: Withholding taxes, Work Permits, VISA, financing, PRS, VAT, royalties, foreign currency fluctuation, breakeven point, profit, loss and cash flow
  • How to build a business plan: Venue, Production, Marketing, Insurance, Logistics, Ticketing deals, Food & Beverage, merch deals.
  • How to make an offer: Flat Fees, back end, budget, forecast, settlement.
  • Festivals vs headliner tour: What are the differences between the deals offered and how it affects to the artist. 

Workshop 3: Contemporary Issues in Live Music

  • The new normal: International touring on a post Brexit and post pandemic era.
  • Political and legal factors
  • Cultural landscape and migration
  • Technological advances
  • Sustainability
  • Social Media and online events

Workshop 4: Pitching your Solutions

  • Students pitch ideas back to Just Life Music for feedback
  • Students will then individually complete Shortlist.Me interview to win the prize of joining Just Life Music for an event in Europe including flights and accommodation. 

Sessions will be physical on campus on the following dates and times:

  • 27th September 6-8pm
  • 6th October 4-6pm
  • 13th October 4-6pm
  • 20th October 4-6pm

You will continue your group work via MS Teams between sessions to complete some takeaway tasks set.

You will need to attend all of these workshop dates in order to participate in the workshop series and gain the HEAR award.
