Applying for Jobs in the UK
Posted on: 14 June 2024 by Ujjawal Mittal in Hints, tips and advice
As a student or fresh graduate in the UK, securing your dream job can be a daunting task. However, with the right strategy, you can navigate the job application process successfully. Ujjawal looks at a step-by-step approach to increase your chances of landing your desired role.
Step 1 - Balance Part-Time Work and Applications
While part-time jobs can be crucial for managing expenses and gaining transferable skills, consider reducing your hours to dedicate more time to job applications. It’s not about quitting part-time work altogether but finding a balance that allows you to focus on your future career.
Step 2 - Set a Consistent Application Schedule
Decide on a specific time of day when you feel most productive to work on applications. Tailoring CVs and writing unique cover letters for each job takes time, so establish a regular schedule that fits into your weekly routine.
Step 3 - Track Your Applications
The most important step in my opinion is keeping track of your applications. Create a spreadsheet to log details such as company names, job roles, opening and closing dates, application stages, and follow-up reminders. You can use the online tracker for finance and consulting jobs. They will soon launch the tracker for tech jobs as well. Tailoring your tracker to your needs will help you stay organized and proactive.
Step 4 - Set Applications Goals
Set a target for the number of applications you aim to complete each day, such as 5. However, be flexible and adjust your goals based on the demands of specific job applications. If you're applying for graduate programs that require tests and video interviews, allocate time accordingly. Leverage resources like GraduateFirst and Shortlist.me for assistance with tests and recorded interviews.
Step 5 - Network Actively
In the UK recruitment market, 80% of hiring is done internally, so building relationships is crucial and can open doors to opportunities. Attend career fairs, join relevant groups, and participate in networking events. Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals and employers.
Step 6 - Understand Job Requirements
Carefully read job descriptions and understand the eligibility criteria. Don't hesitate to reach out to employers and inquire about their willingness to hire international graduates. In my experience, employers based in London may be more open to hiring international applicants.
Step 7 - Tailor Your CV and Cover Letter
Customize your CV and cover letter for each application. Your cover letter should answer three key questions: Why this company? Why this role? Why you? Tailor your responses to reflect the job description and company values.
Step 8 - Follow Up Politely
If you haven’t heard back within a few weeks, send a polite follow-up email to inquire about the status of your application.
Step 9 - Prepare for Interviews and Assessment Centres
Once you receive an interview or assessment centre invitation, research the company’s culture, values, and recent news. Visit forums like Student Room to learn about the assessment process. Connect with current employees in similar roles on LinkedIn. Prepare answers for common interview questions. Remember to have thoughtful questions ready to ask the interviewer.
Step 10 - Seek Feedback and Reflect
After your interview, thank the interviewer for their time and ask for feedback. Reflect on your performance and identify areas for improvement for your next interview.
