Lessons from the UK Job Hunt: An international student’s perspective

Aditi Gaikwad, a 2024 MSc Project Management graduate, is now working as an Engineering Coordinator at Jaguar Land Rover. She shares a few valuable insights into the UK job market.
We recently caught up with her to hear about her journey and gather her advice for students and recent graduates navigating the UK job market. Here’s what she shared:
“Many friends and fellow students have reached out to me about navigating the UK job market, especially as an international student. It’s a challenging journey , no doubt, but through my own experience, I’ve picked up a few key insights that might help:
1. Learning vs. Hustling
It was surprising for me to see how involvement in extracurriculars, guest lectures or career development events was often viewed with scepticism as a student, while doing lengthy part-time shifts and missing lectures was normalised. In a time-bound master's programme, prioritising your academic and personal development is your foundation for what comes next.
2. Fact-Check Your Future: Myths vs. Market Reality
A common narrative I heard was, “There are no jobs out there for us.” But what I learned is doing your own research is powerful. Understand the market, explore where your strengths fit in, and most importantly—choose a course that aligns with your long-term goals. Your decisions matter more than the noise around you.
3. Your Campus, Your Catalyst
I was lucky to be part of a university that actively partnered with renowned organisations and companies which offered platforms for real-world exposure. Tapping into those resources gave me an edge and expanded my learning beyond the classroom.
4. The Early Bird Advantage
Time is everything. Starting early not only gives you a head start but also helps you refine your approach. Be mindful of seasonal hiring trends as opportunities slow down during holidays and catch pace after a new financial year, so it’s wise to plan your applications when activity is at its peak.
5. Connections That Count
Networking turned out to be just as valuable—if not more—than sending out endless applications. Engaging with professionals, attending events, or even reaching out via LinkedIn can open doors that a standard application might not. Be intentional with your outreach, it really does pay off.
The journey is tough, but being proactive, informed, and intentional efforts can truly shift the odds in your favour.”
