Stepping away from my degree: Oliver

Posted on: 5 September 2024 by Richard Finch in Class of 2023

Oliver Mawson is a Class of 2023 BSc Archaeology graduate now working as a Finance Graduate at Siemens Energy.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

Through LinkedIn. I wanted to leave archaeology for better pay and benefits. I was able to secure this job through much trial, error and interviews. I found LinkedIn was a great platform for seeking out new opportunities.

How did you get to where you are now?

Learning how to cater my strengths to roles and stand out in interviews was key. Truly separating from the pack by bringing something new to the role compared to 500 other graduates was essential.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

The feeling of personal and career growth has been the most rewarding and enjoyable aspect of my role thus far.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The time between getting a degree and getting a job. The market is saturated with recent graduates with high achieving degrees, skills and experience

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates.

  1. Don't feel limited by your degree field.
  2. Work on your confidence in interviews, they are looking for coachability not a CEO.
  3. Find the space that occupies both your interests as a job and your personal passions, that is where your ideal starting point is for work.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
