Stepping Away: Lucy

Posted on: 3 November 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Lucy Moore is a Class of 2023 BSc Biological Sciences graduate, now working as a Project Manager at Gardiner & Theobald.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I heard about G&T through research online looking for roles in project management and came across the G&T non-cognate graduate scheme where they allow you to undertake a part time masters in Construction Management in order to accelerate your journey to become chartered surveyors.

How did you get to where you are now?

I undertook a summer internship in the industry between my second and third year at university and thoroughly enjoyed it. I then researched how I would be able to get into the industry without a relevant degree and found that I would require 5 years of industry experience if I did not obtain further education that was RICS accredited.

I then applied for a number of graduate schemes early on in my third year of uni, that would allow me to complete the masters part time alongside working and gaining valuable, hands on, skills. This lead to a number of online and in person interviews and assessment centres that allowed me to showcase my skills and passion for the industry and eventually lead to me accepting the job offer for Assistant Project Manager at Gardiner & Theobald.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of multiple teams working on several different projects. I am particularly proud to say that during my first year at G&T I have been part of the team to successfully complete 3 fit-out projects of commercial offices (with number 4 due at the start of September!). This has been incredibly fulfilling and motivating to continue working hard.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I have found the work balance between working and studying to be a challenge. I genuinely enjoy my job enough that I want to keep working on it when I should be studying! I have learnt to create good boundaries with my managers and colleagues to ensure I manage my time well and utilise my calendar to block out solid studying time.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Looking outside your degree for your first job isn’t a failure it’s a new opportunity! If you feel you have gained skills that would be useful in a new industry then why not apply and see what happens.

  2. Always tailor your CVs and cover letters to the job you are applying for, they will notice and appreciate your attention to detail.

  3. If you want some experience in a new industry, reaching out to people on LinkedIn or via emails found on companies websites can be incredibly worth while (I only got my internship through an email I sent to a company that had already closed their internship applications). What's the worst that can happen.
