Progressing to Postgrad: Morgan
Posted on: 25 November 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023
Morgan Bradley is a Class of 2023 Psychology graduate who is went on to study for a Digital Marketing Masters at King's College London.
How did you hear about your course and decide to apply for it?
I'd heard about this course while researching institutions that provide masters degrees in digital marketing. I knew I wanted to give living in London a go at some point, and I really liked the sound of the course content at King's College, so I decided there would be no harm in applying.
How did you get to where you are now?
During my final year of my Psychology BSc (Hons), I wasn't really sure what direction to take after graduation. I knew I needed to take a step back from studying, so I decided to begin applying for temp jobs within the marketing sphere as this was an industry that I'd developed an interest in working in while at Liverpool.
After a couple months off over summer, I was employed as a Temporary Research Analyst for a market research agency. My team here were very supportive and this role really helped build on the skills I'd gained while studying psychology and also allowed me to develop some experience in market research.
After my contract ended, I used the money I'd saved to go travelling solo around Australia and travelling with my two best friends from uni around South East Asia. During this period I applied to King's and successfully obtained a place on their Digital Marketing MSc beginning in September. Just after returning home from my travels and prior to beginning my masters, I did a really interesting marketing internship at a vitamins and supplements company which got me back into the swing of working and learning about marketing practices as well as the industry as a whole.
Your favourite experience as part of your course?
Probably travelling to Jersey to carry out a series of focus groups during my previous role as a Temporary Research Analyst. It was my first trip away for a job and the insights I gained from helping facilitate these focus groups have already been applicable during my masters degree.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
I suppose the most challenging part has been coming to terms with the fact that I haven't taken the most natural route with regards to getting a permanent job and completing a masters straight after my undergrad degree.
Sometimes I question whether I should've taken this more 'traditional route' in order to make myself appear more employable, but ultimately I'm happy the way things have worked out and I feel very lucky that I've had the opportunity to work, travel and study a discipline that interests me all within a year of graduating from Liverpool.
Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:
- Rule out what you don't want to do, as working this out can feel easier than figuring out what you do want to do. Plus, doing this still means you're one step closer to finding out what career direction to take.
- Make use of the uni's career service while you're there!
- Apply for anything that sounds interesting or relevant to you, even if you don't meet every single of the requirements under the job spec.
