Progressing to Postgrad: Mia
Posted on: 21 November 2024 by Kalbir Cross in Class of 2023
Mia Reid is a Class of 2023 LLB Law graduate who studied for her University of Law LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) alongside working as a Legal Assistant at Aaron and Partners LLP.
How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?
I decided to apply for my course immediately after graduating with my Law degree because I was determined to further my studies with the goal of becoming a Solicitor. This program allows me to complete the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQE) 1 and 2 while also earning a master's in Law.
How did you get to where you are now?
After completing my degree, I actively sought positions at various law firms across the North West to gain work experience in the legal industry. A turning point for me was joining the mentorship program offered by the University of Law, which connects students with Solicitors who share similar interests. Through this program, I received invaluable guidance and networking opportunities. My mentor provided me with key contacts on LinkedIn, which led me to reach out to a Partner at Aaron and Partners LLP. This connection ultimately resulted in my role as a Legal Assistant.
Your favourite experience as part of your role?
One of my favourite experiences in my role so far has been participating in a Judicial Mediation. This opportunity allowed me to observe the intricate processes and formalities involved in mediation first-hand. I particularly enjoyed engaging directly with our clients during this time as it provided me with a deeper understanding of their perspectives and concerns. This experience not only enhanced my knowledge of the mediation process but also reinforced my passion for helping clients navigate their legal challenges.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The most challenging aspect of my graduate journey has been preparing for the SQE exams. Balancing intensive study and revision while managing my master's lessons and working part-time at a law firm has required a significant commitment of time and energy. This experience has tested my organizational skills and resilience, but it has also taught me the importance of perseverance and effective time management. Navigating these demands strengthened my dedication to my legal career and my ability to handle multiple responsibilities.
Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:
- Networking: Attend as many events as you can and utilise LinkedIn!
- Stay Organised: I always update my planner and to-do lists to ensure I keep organised and don't miss important deadlines.
- Don't stress: This is easier said that done but it is normal to encounter challenges, remember it is all part of your journey!
