Progressing to Postgrad: Ethan

Posted on: 27 January 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2023

Class of 2023 graduate Ethan Savage is a Future Trainee Solicitor at DLA Piper who is undertaking the Solicitor Qualifying Exams (SQE) at the University of Law.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

My Politics and International Business degree led me to explore diverse avenues. To pinpoint my true calling, I delved into various industries, determining that my blend of business acumen, political interest, and thirst for learning, aligned perfectly with a career in commercial law. This motivated me to pursue further study on a law conversion course.

How did you get to where you are now?

The most significant factor in reaching my current position has been gaining practical experience. I leveraged my undergraduate degree to secure internships across various industries, which provided valuable insights into the recruitment process, helped me transition smoothly into professional life, and allowed me to build a strong network of industry professionals.

Your favourite experience so far?

My current role and course are particularly engaging because of the dynamic nature of the legal industry. Throughout my GDL and SQE preparation course, I have gained valuable insights into the evolution of the law. Law firms emphasise the importance of commercial awareness. Staying up to date with legislative changes and industry news is essential not only for the firm’s success but also to ensure that clients receive the most relevant and informed advice.

One of my most impactful professional development experiences was attending a case management conference for an international insurance dispute arising from a global conflict. This experience reinforced my belief that my degree in Politics and International Business is highly complementary to a career in law.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging aspect of my graduate journey has been delaying gratification. While many of my friends are travelling or starting graduate roles, it is difficult to stay motivated and disciplined. However, securing a training contract at a leading firm confirmed that pursuing further postgraduate study was the right decision!

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Network - Be bold and reach out to people on LinkedIn or use industry contacts to seek opportunities or discuss careers.

  2. Be yourself - No common personality trait fits the corporate mould. Companies need diversity of thought and people to contribute to their success. Always be polite and professional, be yourself and let your true interests shine through.

  3. Relax - Become immune to rejection, learn from your mistakes, and bounce back stronger. I had to go through multiple application processes and internships to find the role that suited me, and at times, it felt overwhelming. However, looking back, it was all part of the process.
  4.
