Progressing to Postgrad: Charlotte
Posted on: 24 January 2025 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023
Charlotte Doyle is a BA French and Hispanic Studies who is now undertaking a Master’sdegree in Translation and Interpreting at University of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès.
How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?
I found the course through my own research into further study in France. I decided to apply for a master’s course abroad as I considered this to be the best way to gain the qualifications I need to become a professional translator, whilst also continuing to improve my level of French by way of cultural immersion.
How did you get to where you are now?
To be accepted onto my master’s course, I went through multiple interview processes and exams to test whether my level of French was deemed sufficient.
On top of that, the preparation for moving to another country, the visa process and ensuring financial stability took a lot of work. Although I worked extremely hard to finish my undergrad degree at the same time as preparing myself to make this next step, it wouldn't have been possible without the support of my tutor at UoL, who gave me the idea to complete a degree abroad in the first place and had meetings with me to go through my personal statement.
It would also not have been possible without the support of my girlfriend who, offered constant moral support and helped me in any way she could to make this transitional part of my life run as smoothly as possible.
Your favourite experience so far?
My favourite experience thus far on my course must be the interactions we are able to have with various professionals within the field. My course is extremely orientated towards insertion into the professional world, and for this reason we have classes with an array of specialists from various areas of translation. It gives us an insight into how the real-world functions, and it's also wonderful to learn from people who are extremely passionate about their work.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The most challenging part about my graduate journey has been the pressure to feel as though I needed to have everything decided the moment the diploma was handed to me. I think that's something that a lot of graduates can resonate with, and it makes the future seem incredibly scary.
Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:
- Don't rush. You don't need to have your whole life figured out as soon as you finish university. Take some time, figure out what you want from life and then go from there.
- Don't expect your dream job to appear the moment you graduate. Unfortunately, dreams take time and hard work, so don't feel dissuaded if you haven't landed your dream job within the first year of finishing uni.
- Enjoy being young! Now is the perfect time to try things out, enjoy your life and celebrate how far you've already come, you should be proud.

Graduate Outcomes Survey
The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
