I Got Hired: Oisin
Posted on: 7 November 2024 by Richard Finch in Class of 2023
Oisin O’Cleirigh is a Class of 2023 BA Philosophy & Ancient History graduate who now works as a Programming and Partnership Officer at the National Trust.
How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?
I found the job listed on Reed, by filtering jobs that were charitable or non-profit organisations. I decided to apply for it because it seemed like a great opportunity to miss out on.
How did you get to where you are now?
The role I successfully applied for was nothing I had previous experience in directly. The key thing for me was manipulating any transferable skills from my bachelor’s degree, previous work experience and co-curricular activities into how I could suit the role. What underlined all of that was a motivation to work for an esteemed charity.
Your favourite experience as part of your role?
A highlight for me is being able to work across two different sites - Formby and Rufford Old Hall; one being a remote coastal and woodland site, and the other being a Tudor house and garden. I enjoy learning the history across the two sites from the many experts and enthusiasts I get to work with daily, as well as taking my breaks in such beautiful areas.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
I suppose for me, it’s been overcoming an initial lack of confidence to know I can do the job. Despite not having any experience in my current role, it’s important to remember that the people you work with are there to help you get better in your role, and it’s never embarrassing to ask for clarification or support! Whether that be during your degree or finding your feet in a new role.
Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:
- Don’t dedicate full days towards pushing your cover letters & CVs to employers. Maybe do 1-3 a day and then move on with the rest of your day.
- Never miss out on applying for a job even if you think you don’t have the all of the experience they have asked for in the application.
- It can take a while to land a job. Don’t give up.
