I Got Hired: Nathan
Posted on: 14 January 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2023
Nathan Skeet is a Class of 2023 Geography graduate who is now working as a Junior Global Intelligence Analyst at Securitas Risk Intelligence.
How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?
I discovered the Junior Global Intelligence Analyst role by setting up job alerts on LinkedIn that were based in the field of private/corporate intelligence. Upon discovering the position I researched the role as well as my employer, and compared it to similar positions advertised by different companies to give myself a better picture of the pros/cons and what working in a private intelligence unit entails.
How did you get to where you are now?
I’ve always had an interest in intelligence which I developed through my own reading and research, but only became driven to pursue an intelligence career while learning about related topics during my undergrad studies.
Despite not having a degree entirely based in the field and no industry experience, I believed I could still achieve my goal through determination and demonstrating how my transferable skills and knowledge, from both previous jobs and my university course, could be successfully applied to an intelligence position.
Your favourite experience in your role?
I’m not able to give one specific example as my favourite experience, however, I would say the times when I’ve been required to produce a report for clients in a very small time frame following an emergency incident, such as a terrorist attack, have been the experiences I feel I’ve gained the most from as they’ve challenged me to use my own judgement to devise an immediate course of action and to successfully implement my writing skills and intelligence knowledge while under pressure.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The most challenging part of the journey from graduate to full-time employment in a job I want to be in was dealing with multiple instances of rejection and the consequences this had on my own self-belief. Navigating through countless application processes in a highly competitive job market can be incredibly draining and difficult, especially when feedback is rare and the majority of the process is digital.
Top 3 tips for current students and graduates?
The 3 main things I would advise graduates and students to do is to:
- Trust in your own skills, knowledge, and character - self-confidence goes a long way especially when you may lack certain academic merits compared to your competitors.
- Don’t worry if you aren’t likely or able to obtain your dream position straight away - it’s easier to move jobs once you’ve got your foot in the door and acquired industry-specific skills andexperience.
- Don’t rush into accepting a job offer just because it’s the first one you get or because you believe you're unlikely to get more, accepting a job offer is a decision that can significantly impact your life outside of work, and it can be worth waiting for a position that is better suited to you in terms of the role, who it's for, and where it is based.
