I Got Hired: Molly

Posted on: 25 October 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Molly Kirk is a Class of 2023 BA Geography graduate who now works as a Business Officer for Historic England.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I was sent the job by a friend’s parent who already worked there and thought it might be something I would be interested in. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but this seemed like a role that would bring in some elements of my geography degree (maps and GIS), but also give me new business skills and experience.

How did you get to where you are now?

The recruitment process involved answering 5 questions related to the role and then an online interview. This was one of my first job interviews and so I was extremely nervous!

The fact I’d done a practice interview before as part of my degree helped me feel more prepared for it.

My motivations were just generally getting on the first step of the employment ladder. I tried not to get too caught up on securing my ‘dream job’ but rather just getting something I could build on.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

My role involves logging applications and responding to public enquiries regarding heritage, listed buildings and Scheduled Monuments throughout the Midlands.

I  love the variety of my role. No planning application/ query is the same and so it definitely keeps each day interesting. I also love the flexibility of being able to work from home, it gives me so much more time to see friends/ family and do things I enjoy outside of work.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Just generally feeling a bit lost and not knowing what career path to head down. I didn’t do a vocational degree such as medicine, and therefore there’s a lot of pressure to know what you want to do straight away.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Practice potential recruitment process elements, whenever you get the chance I.e., written questions, online interviews etc - will help you so much for the real thing!
  2. Don’t feel pressure to have everything figured out once you leave uni, not even just job-wise. It’s a lot easier said than done but be assured a lot of people will be struggling with the post-uni adjustment - I definitely did!

  3. If you get the chance to travel do it! It’s a lot harder to find the time to once you’re in employment.
