I Got Hired: Mesoo

Posted on: 2 November 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Mesoo Ubadigha is a Class of 2023 graduate from our LLB Law degree who now works as a Wealth & Investment Graduate at Aviva.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I first heard about the graduate scheme in wealth management through my role as a career coach on campus. In that position, I had the chance to learn about a variety of career paths, including wealth management, and its alignment with many of the skills and interests I had initially pursued in law became apparent. I decided to apply because wealth management offers a unique opportunity to work closely with clients, navigate complex financial regulations, and provide tailored advice—all of which overlap with what I enjoyed about the legal field. This blend of analytical work, client interaction, and strategy made it an ideal fit for my career goals.

How did you get to where you are now?

I got to where I am now by fully taking advantage of the exposure and opportunities my first role on the graduate scheme afforded me. From the beginning, I made it a priority to say yes to any extra opportunities that could help build my personal brand and develop my skillset. This proactive approach allowed me to gain visibility within the company and expand my network. By consistently delivering on these additional responsibilities, I was able to secure a promotional role leading an exciting new project for the business. Throughout the process, I’ve also had great support from mentors and colleagues who have guided and encouraged me, which has been instrumental in my success. My motivation has always been to grow professionally while making a tangible impact on the business, and this has driven me to seek out every chance to learn and contribute.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

My favourite experience on the role was when I had the opportunity to present to the business stakeholders just 7 months into the role. It was nerve-racking at first, but it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Being able to share insights and ideas with such senior people within the company not only boosted my confidence but also allowed me to network and build relationships with key decision-makers. It was a pivotal moment that made me realize how much I’d grown in such a short time, and it highlighted the level of trust the company had in my abilities.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Honestly, it has been the jump from a university lifestyle to the real world. The transition to full-time work while managing life on your own has been a big adjustment. There’s a lot to consider—living alone for the first time, budgeting, savings, and for me, even starting to invest. Balancing all of that while still wanting to enjoy many of the things I loved doing at uni has definitely been a challenge. It’s been a learning curve in terms of finding that balance, but it’s also been a great opportunity to develop independence and financial discipline.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Take advantage of every opportunity: Whether it’s internships, networking events, or joining student societies, get involved as much as possible. These experiences help build your skills, confidence, and personal brand while expanding your network, which is invaluable when applying for roles after graduation.

  2. Develop good financial habits early: Start budgeting, saving, and, if possible, investing as soon as you can. Transitioning from student life to the working world can be financially overwhelming, so having good money management skills will give you more freedom and peace of mind.

  3. Keep learning and stay adaptable: The job market is constantly changing, and new skills are always in demand. Whether it’s through courses, certifications, or self-study, make continuous learning a priority. Staying adaptable and open to growth will help you stay ahead in your career.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
