I Got Hired: Melissa

Posted on: 12 September 2024 by Kalbir Cross in Class of 2023

Melissa Brodie is a Class of 2023 graduate who now works as a HR Graduate at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

Randomly, I found it from a post on Facebook. It highlighted my now colleague as a 'woman in motorsport' and her role as a student recruiter which aligned with my degree and desires to work in Formula 1.

How did you get to where you are now?

After graduating from university without a clear career path, I took on a short-term contract at a local university in the enrolment team. This opportunity gave me insights into data systems and procedures in a customer-facing role, which pointed me towards a career in Human Resources. As a Formula 1 enthusiast (I even wrote my dissertation on F1), I began searching for relevant positions with Formula 1 teams. The skills and experience I gained from the two-month contract at the local university proved to be extremely valuable during interviews, as many of the skills I acquired were transferable.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

I've had the opportunity to represent Mercedes AMG HPP at events such as the Formula Student event at Silverstone, Women in Engineering Society Conferences, and the Mission 44 collaboration with F1. This has been an amazing opportunity to use my sociology knowledge to make a positive change in the environment of Formula 1 and motorsport, helping to make it more inclusive.

Some fun highlights have been having Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff come to the factory to thank everyone at the end of the 2023 season, and also getting to attend the Silverstone Friday practice for free, which was the same weekend Lewis had his historic win at Silverstone.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Moving away from Liverpool has been the most challenging part of my graduate journey. Liverpool has an amazing atmosphere, nightlife, culture, and my friends are there, which I miss. Most Formula 1 factories are based in quiet villages in central England with few shops and activities. However, since the company has a large student population, we have found ways to create our own fun.

Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. There will be others with the same degree and similar grades, but you can stand out by sharing unique experiences, volunteering, and any projects you are involved in to demonstrate your enthusiasm for a role.
  2. If you graduate without anything lined up, don't worry. Just be prepared to apply when the right opportunity comes up.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
