I Got Hired: Lucy

Posted on: 15 October 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Lucy Corrigan is a Class of 2023 Psychology graduate who is now working as an Assistant Psychologist at Esland School.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

After completing my final exams and my research project in third year, I began job hunting online. I heard about Psychologist graduate roles through job search websites such as indeed. I applied through this and started with an agency that allocated me my role.

How did you get to where you are now?

During my time studying at the University of Liverpool, I volunteered once a week with a mental health charity in Birkenhead delivering 1:1 CBT support to young people. This volunteering really assisted with me gaining my first job role in the field of psychology after attaining my degree.

After finishing third year, I applied for a graduate role in a school as a Clinical Teaching Assistant. This involved working with children under SEN provision, including developmental trauma and neurodiversity. I worked in this role for 4 months and the company I was working for opened an assistant psychologist role. I carried out internal interviews amongst fellow psychology graduates in the December and luckily, I secured the role!

This was perfect for me as this was my dream role to gain the most valuable experience for my future studies hopefully on the DClinPsyc. The more relevant experience you can gain was the most important factor in assisting me to perform well in my AP interview, as well as being able to apply knowledge of psychological theory I learnt in my degree to practice.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

Forming strong rapport with the young people I work with and visibly being able to see the massive progress they have been making which can carry into their lives in the future.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of my graduate journey was the pressure of getting into the perfect post graduate job. Sometimes, I had to remember that all experience is valuable, and it helps you progress into the higher positions.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates.

  1. Applications come with rejection. This is not a reflection of your abilities, and something better suited to you will come up so don’t give up applying.
  2. Be confident in your knowledge in job interviews.
  3. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to find the perfect job straight away.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
