I Got Hired: Lily

Posted on: 27 November 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Lily Harmon is a LLB Law graduate who now works as a Paralegal at Stephensons Solicitors.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

Stephensons was recommended to me as a great place to work and train, especially in family law which is the area I was most interested in, so I applied for a job.

How did you get to where you are now?

It started during university, I took part in more practical modules where I could get involved which were great for my CV, I then did some work experience at a family law firm in the summer of my second year, this solidified that I would like to do family law when I graduated. I have had great help and support from my family, my uni friends and the people who have allowed me to gather work experience with them to get where I am today.

Your favourite experience in your role?

I enjoy going to court with parents who are going through a really difficult time and being able to comfort them in some way and make the day a little bit easier. It feels rewarding when they get a result they wanted.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I found applying for jobs difficult. Especially as I took 6 months out before I started applying. I felt like all the graduate jobs were taken and I applied for a lot before I got my job. It’s easy to want to give up and get a job in something else but if you stick it out something will come along.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Don’t give up looking for a graduate job even when it feels like one is never going to come.
  2. You’re still only young, if you go into a career after graduation and it’s not what you thought it would be you’ve got your whole life to figure out what else you want to do.
  3. Sometimes it’s good to take a break, I did 6 months of travelling before I got my job and I feel like it really refreshed me and made me ready to enter the workforce not burnt out from uni.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
