I Got Hired: Lawrence

Posted on: 18 November 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Lawrence Palmer is a Class of 2023 Computer Science with Software Development graduate who is now working as a Cybersecurity Graduate at Visa.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I used online platforms such as Gradcracker, Handshake, Ratemyplacement and Linkedin to search and apply for graduate roles.

How did you get to where you are now?

I applied and was accepted for an internship in Cybersecurity at Visa. This was also an extended interview for the graduate scheme. I worked closely with my lecturers during my time at university and was inspired by my Cybersecurity module, which motivated me to apply for this role.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

I have really enjoyed meeting new people and learning as much as I have in the 10 months in my position.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Being denied an internship due to my degree title being different to another candidate was a big challenge. Being able to bounce back from this and carry on applying and interviewing was incredibly hard.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Apply way earlier than you think you should!
  2. Ask questions, companies want bright minds not people that agree with everything.
  3. Find something that makes you stand out from the crowd.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
