I Got Hired: Lauren

Posted on: 4 November 2024 by Richard Finch in Class of 2023

Lauren Hughes is a Class of 2023 MBiolSci (Genetics) graduate who now works as an Account Executive at Cuttsy+Cuttsy.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

After graduation I undertook a position at the Perron Institute, Perth, Australia which my Masters supervisor (Thank you, Prof John Quinn) helped me organise.

Following this I decided that the lab life wasn’t for me. Whilst looking for jobs for when I returned back home I found on LinkedIn roles in the healthcare and medical communications industry such as account executives and medical writers.

How did you get to where you are now?

Through LinkedIn and with the help of a recruiter I managed to obtain my current position as an account executive.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

My motivation for pursuing both my degree at the University of Liverpool and my choice in career is to ultimately provide a positive impact on the lives of individuals suffering from different disease and conditions. My current position allows me to do this on a larger level by working with a variety of pharmaceutical companies.

My favourite experience so far has been working with a variety of different people and being able to utilise my skills as well as continuing to grow and learning new things.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part is definitely trying to figure out what to do after university and which path you want to go down. Sometimes you get defeated when it comes to job rejections but you just have to keep going and your perfect position will come at some point and it’s all part of a learning curve.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Enjoy the time you have left at university as it passes by so quickly.
  2. Work hard.
  3. Be yourself and be confident.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
