I Got Hired: Kira
Posted on: 4 November 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023
Kira Sutcliffe is a Class of 2023 Law with Criminology graduate who is now working as a Legal Assistant at Bond Tyrnee.
How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?
I was working as a paralegal in a small family law firm at the time and wanted to try a new area of law to progress my knowledge.
How did you get to where you are now?
As I was finishing my third year assessments I decided to begin applying for jobs in my local area. Within a month or so I had an interview at a local family law firm and was offered the job. I spent 9 months at this firm and it was a great place to ease into my legal career. As I approached the 6 month mark I decided that whilst I enjoyed family law, it was not what I wanted to do. Whilst at university I did medical law and absolutely loved it so I applied to a few personal injury places and that’s when I came across my current position. My biggest supporters were my friends and family.
Your favourite experience in your role?
My favourite experience has to be the opportunity to attend court hearings. Whilst I was working in family law I was able to attend court to take detailed notes. I got to watch the barristers arguing the case and got a real view of the law in practice. I must also say that the people I met whilst at UoL have formed such an important part of my life.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The most challenging part was getting my foot into the legal realm. As many law students will know, the market can seem oversaturated and I can’t lie you do have to face a few rejections.
Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:
- Enjoy the time you have left at uni, you won’t get this experience again!!
- Try and take on some volunteering work in a law firm/court - I believe Liverpool civil courts run a scheme which allows students to gain experience.
- You will face many rejections in your career but don’t let this stop you - there is a place for everyone in this industry
