I Got Hired: Jacob

Posted on: 3 November 2024 by Richard Finch in Class of 2023

Jacob Griffith is a Class of 2023 Geography graduate who worked as an Intern at the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights (CCHR) and is now embarking on a MSc International Relations at London School of Economics.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I heard about the opportunity to do an internship in Cambodia  from the Law department, as a staff member had worked for CCHR a few years prior. I applied a few months later as I wanted to gain experience working in international politics and law. It was also a great opportunity to live in a new country for three months and I was eager to give it a go.

How did you get to where you are now?

I spent a lot of time on my CV and cover letter and this helped me get the opportunity. I made the most of the opportunity by approaching everything (new work, new culture, new country) with an open mind, interested to explore and to learn. This way I made great connections with others and was able to take part in some really interesting work!

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

Drafting a section of Freedom House's 'Freedom of the Net: Cambodia' report has been my favourite task so far.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I am now beginning a master's course in International Relations and find it challenging to focus on a specific career path or research interest. For example, while I completed an Internship in Cambodia, I intend to focus on the Middle East region in my future research and work, so am a little scattered!

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Go for new opportunities that force you to step out your comfort zone
  2. Have a clear idea about what you are interested in why you are drawn to this
  3. Work hard but have hobbies too!
