I Got Hired: Jack
Posted on: 29 October 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023
Jack Devonshire is a Class of 2023 BSc Computer Science with Software Development graduate. His first role after graduation was Backend Software Developer at Codeweavers.
How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?
I was fortunate enough to get a placement at Codeweavers and apply various skills learnt from my degree such as agile practices, which then led me to getting a graduate role and developing my experience from there.
I knew I wanted a software development specific role and I found the job after searching for general software development careers. I decided to apply based on how much emphasis they put on their culture and learning.
How did you get to where you are now?
I'm now about to start a new career at HSBC which is incredibly exciting, and I think the main things that led to this point where the skills I gained through my placement year and my graduate role at Codeweavers.
Your favourite experience as part of your role?
My favourite experience as part of my current role isn't really related to work, but it's the people I've met along the way. The company I'm currently at has a great culture with amazing people, and the companies social events are the highlights of my time there. Aside from the social aspects, I've also loved working on projects that have real world impact, such as developing deeper integrations between car manufacturers and lenders such as Santander to enable customers to get the best finance deals available to them.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The most challenging part of my graduate journey was when I finished University and went back to my placement company. It took me a few months to catchup on all of the practices I had forgotten whilst back at University, but when things started to click into place again, I felt like a part of the team again.
Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:
-
My first tip is to get on a placement scheme or a summer internship, this will give your CV a boost and make you stand out in an increasingly competitive industry.
-
My second tip is to stay focussed on studying even if times seem tough, if you're about to graduate you likely just need to climb that final hill before you're relatively stress free.
-
And finally, don't give up on the job search, it can be tough but it will be worth it in the end.
