I Got Hired: Jack

Posted on: 10 October 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Jack Fearns is a Class of 2023 MEng Mechanical Engineering graduate, now working as a Graduate Mechanical at Sellafield Ltd.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I heard about the Sellafield graduate scheme through the Gradcracker website. I decided to apply for a position on the scheme due to the interest in working in the nuclear sector. Working for Sellafield whose mission is challenging, exciting and one of a kind really inspired me to want to work for this company. Working alongside some of the best engineers in the UK, tackling challenges that no one has ever faced before makes the job exciting.

How did you get to where you are now?

Sellafield recruitment process for the graduate scheme is very similar to several other companies recruiting graduates. The majority start off with an application form such as a CV, you will then be invited to take part in game-based assessments, followed by an interview and an assessment day making up of group tasks with other applicants.

For my application it really helped that I ensured I was as prepared as possible, for example I researched the company I was applying to and understood the current challenges they are facing as an organisation. Prepare interview questions and having mock interviews with friends or family members is a great way of ensuring you are well prepared.

During my interview with Sellafield, I used my experience from the capstone project to demonstrate my ability to work in a team, ability work to tight deadlines, demonstrate creative thinking and working efficiently.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

My favourite experience is being able to work on the Sellafield Ltd site. The historic site is one of a kind and has changed its operating purpose numerous times. Being on the Sellafield site gives you an idea of how big of a task we have in decommissioning several legacy buildings and safely storing spent nuclear fuel.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of my journey so far has been having to relocate to West Cumbria for my job role. Having to move away from family and friends who are based in Liverpool was at first difficult, however Sellafield is on the doorstep of the Lake District which is a beautiful part of the UK. Family and friends visit frequently and it’s great to be able to show them parts of the Lake District they have not seen before.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates.

  1. When being interviewed make sure you are enthusiastic about the company, ask the person interviewing questions about the company and how they can help you develop professionally.

  2. Take the leap when applying for jobs, at first, I was hesitant to apply for jobs too far away from family, but I have really enjoyed my time in West Cumbria so far.

  3. Take interest in further developing as an engineer. In my case, showing my commitment to wanting to become a chartered engineer in my interview really impressed the interviewer with my ambition and dedication to improve.
