Harvey Kwan is a Class of 2023 BSc Biochemistry graduate, now working as a Trainee Clinical Scientist (Biochemistry) for NHS England.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I heard about my role when I was browsing opportunities in my final year of uni. As it’s such a competitive programme I never thought I was in with a chance of getting a place. I wanted to go into an industry where I could utilise my degree (Biochemistry) but I didn’t want to go down the research route.

I decided to apply for for the Scientist Training Programme as a fully funded masters, good salary and interesting field was something I couldn’t pass up on.

How did you get to where you are now?

The application process for my role was quite drawn out. There were several stages of the process which took several months. Aside from the experience I had received during my degree I had no experience in the field that I was applying for. I believe that extra-curricular activities, particularly rugby – really helped my application!

I made sure to apply the experiences I had outside of university and academics to the person specification and job role I was applying for. I had thought about continuing my education further before I found this role, perhaps a Masters and then a PhD further down the line. Discovering that this role combines a fully funded masters with a salary was a huge motivation for me to apply. I was further motivated by discovering that the career progression in this position is clear and that there is opportunity for further PhD level study down the line.

Your favourite experience in your role?

My favourite experience as part of my role so far has been travelling up to the University of Manchester to complete my lectures for the masters portion of my role. I have met a great group of new friends who are in the same role as me. (Manchester is also a really good night out!)

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of my graduate journey was the sudden switch from uni life to working life. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Enjoy uni and the freedom that comes with it.
  2. Apply for everything.
  3. Academic experience isn’t everything, get involved in activities outside of uni/work.
