Progressing Through My Industry: Katherine

Posted on: 27 September 2024 by Kalbir Cross in Class of 2023

Katherine Smith is a Class of 2023 Communications & Media graduate who is now working as a Junior Account Executive at Calvin Marketing.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I completed work experience at Calvin Marketing during Sixth Form. I maintained contact with the team throughout university, and they offered me a job shortly after I graduated.

How did you get to where you are now?

I have undertaken a lot of work experience from a young age. Having Saturday jobs and volunteering at local groups has all helped to contribute to my communication skills and I am also very lucky to have been surrounded by supportive family members and friends who encouraged me to try everything.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

The freedom to let my creativity flow through anything I do. Also, seeing my work published online and in the media.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The transition from seeing friends every day and having weekday freedom to now moving back home with parents and working full time.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Work Experience is more valuable than you think - try new things!

  2. Stay in contact with previous employers - they may offer you a role or know of people and opportunities that you would excel in.

  3. Enjoy yourself - life is too short! If something isn't making you happy, change it.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
