Eloise Burton Carter is a Class of 2023 International Politics and Policy graduate who is now working as a National Management Trainee at Winchester City Council.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

The Local Government Association is a Times Top 100 graduate employer, and I had heard about their graduate programme before. I thought it sounded interesting to rotate around different departments in local government and get real breadth of experience.

How did you get to where you are now?

I applied to every opportunity that came up whilst at university. For example, I took part in the 'Play Your Part: Students in the Community' innovation challenge and completed an internship on the Undergraduate Research Scheme. These experiences really helped me to stand out in my application.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

Working during the local elections was incredibly exciting and reinforced my strong desire to be a part of the upcoming general election!

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

In general, the transition from being a student to a professional is tough. I had imposter syndrome when I first started but it didn't take long to settle in and find my confidence!

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Start applying early! Graduate schemes often have very lengthy application processes.
  2. Get involved with as much as you can whilst at university.
  3. Apply for roles even if you don't think you will be successful.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
