I Got Hired: Ella

Posted on: 15 October 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Ella Dunne is a Class of 2023 Geography graduate now working as a LGA Graduate Management Trainee at Halton Borough Council.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

At the beginning of my third year, I attended a Careers fair at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Walking around feeling a bit overwhelmed seeing the same recruitment campaigns we were all used to seeing, I spotted the Local Government Association’s stand. I have always wanted a career that has the chance to impact people’s day to day lives, and better communities and I felt so naive that I had never considered a career in local government before!

How did you get to where you are now?

I think hard work and determination helped me, but overall being authentic and following my genuine interests is how I got to where I am now. I have also been lucky enough to have been surrounded by supportive friends, family and colleagues in my previous roles, I certainly wouldn’t be where I am without any of them.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

My favourite part of my new role has been meeting new people and learning about such a vast range of career options that local government can offer. I’ve had the chance to manage my own projects, and I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by so many supportive people at the Council. I’m looking forward to my future placements with North West Employers and the LCR Combined Authority to gain an even deeper insight into local government.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

At first, I found it difficult to have the confidence to lead a project and make decisions. There are so many experienced officers in local government and initially, I felt that they wouldn’t need my opinion, however everyone has valued and asked for my perspective over my first year. I’m grateful to the Council to have been invited to contribute to Management Team meetings and spaces where graduates aren’t usually involved, this exposure has really helped my confidence.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
