I Got Hired: Connor

Posted on: 7 November 2024 by Richard Finch in Class of 2023

Connor Wood is a Class of 2023 LLB Law with Politics graduate who now works as an Investment and Trading Compliance Graduate at Pictet Asset Management.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I heard about the role through Handshake whilst I was looking at potential alternatives to law. I decided to apply because I was interested in the industry and felt like the rotational element of the graduate programme would allow me to gain lots of exposure.

How did you get to where you are now?

I impulsively applied one night out of a genuine interest in the industry, despite having no prior experience. I thought my legal background would disadvantage me compared with others who had studied economics and finance. However, this was actually my edge in the hiring process as I thought about concepts and scenarios in a very different way to other applicants.

Additionally, my parents have always encouraged me to pursue non-professional employment since I was young and I believe the soft skills I developed as a result were crucial in succeeding in the interviews.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

My favourite experience has been spending 6 months in Geneva. It has allowed me to embrace a different culture of work and to build cross-border relationships. It’s also been great fun swimming in Lake Geneva during the warmer months!

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Having studied Law, I had nearly zero knowledge about finance when I first started my role. The first few months in particular were a huge learning experience and I had to work tirelessly to bridge that gap.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Download LinkedIn! I know many graduates in my industry who found their jobs through LinkedIn and I would encourage everyone to build their profile ASAP.

  2. Develop your soft skills as much as possible! Firms don’t expect you to know everything and in my experience, often choose applicants who can demonstrate a hard work ethic and enthusiasm.

  3. Take risks! You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take - apply for any roles that might peak your interest even if they don’t traditionally align with your degree.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
