My International Experience: Indiana University Maurer School of Law

Alice is a Class of 2022 LLB graduate who went on to study at Indiana University Maurer School of Law where she completed her LLM qualification.
I had always wanted to study abroad, and as it was difficult for me to do this during my undergraduate course because of the COVID pandemic.
I thought postgraduate study would be a great opportunity to study abroad, and after conducting extensive research I found several scholarships that would make it possible for me to do this.
I decided to apply for a Fulbright Award due to my values being closely aligned to their own. After interviews, I was lucky enough to find out I had been awarded their scholarship to study at Indiana University. From here, it was a long and difficult process of moving out to the USA, with different hurdles such as visas and accommodation. However, eventually I moved out to Indiana in August 2022 and began my study there.
I absolutely loved living in another country. It was amazing to be able to meet new people, experience a different culture, and travel around a country as beautiful as the USA.
It was difficult to be so far away from my friends and family. Although I loved experiencing a new way of life, after a year of living in another country, you do start to miss home comforts and people.
For anyone thinking about studying abroad, I would definitely recommend looking to see what scholarships might be available to help you study in another country. Studying abroad is a great way to live overseas whilst progressing your own education.
My advice for current students:
- When studying abroad, try to make the most of it and travel as much as possible!
- It’s important to balance studying and living.
- Try to keep an open mind when graduating - not everything will go the way you want to but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing.
