Student Destiny Kumari tells us about her internship as a Support Worker.
Introduce yourself!
Hi my name is Destiny Kumari and I study Psychology. I think the course has offered a very broad range of topics within psychology which has really helped students find their path (strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes) to shape their career being fully informed. I am interested in clinical psychology and although there is only one module on Clinical Psychology, I have enjoyed health related modules and wider modules such as social psychology which I could then apply clinical knowledge to.
Where was your internship and what did you do?
My internship was as a support worker. I have provided 24-hour support for clients who have a range of mental and physical health needs. I completed tasks such as personal care, meal preparations, writing reports, attending external appointments and working in a multi-disciplinary team.
How did you find the internship experience and what did you learn?
I found the internship through searching on job sites such as LinkedIn and TotalJobs. I learnt that in order to do the placement module it is a good opportunity to formulate an academic CV and reflect on interview processes which can be enduring. They helped me utilise the STAR approach to answer questions.
What are some of the top skills you've picked up during the internship?
Resilience, teamwork, communication, listening and leadership.
How did you find the support available while you secured your work experience?
The staff were really helpful - always available over email to answer any questions. Handshake was a great platform to search for jobs and I still use this now.
What is next for you?
Continuing the find volunteering experience which I can do alongside my degree. Finish my degree and apply for a master's.
Did your work experience effect your future plans at all?
No, it just reassured me that the choice is right for me and I am capable.
What has been your favourite thing about university?
My favourite thing about university has been the online lectures. I feel like this has been really helpful in order to go back over material and engage with the content to make sure your understanding is firm.
