Nila Dharshini Palvannan is a Class of 2023 Msc in Business Analytics and Big Data graduate who is now working as MI Analyst at Next.

I heard about the MI Analyst role through a post on LinkedIn. As I was actively seeking opportunities that focus on data analysis and tools like SQL, PowerBi this role immediately caught my attention.

My passion lies in working with data, and I was specifically looking for positions that align with my skills and interests in data management and analysis. The MI Analyst role was a perfect match, and I was excited about the opportunity to contribute my expertise in data-centric projects. I decided to apply through  career page , as well as other job sites, to pursue my goal of working in a data-driven environment.

My journey to where I am now involved a structured and determined approach. The recruitment process typically consisted of a screening round followed by two interview rounds, usually spanning over a month. My previous work experience in data-related roles was undoubtedly an advantage, and I made sure to leverage it during the interviews.

Throughout my job search, I surrounded myself with positive and supportive people, which helped me stay motivated. Initially, I made the mistake of focusing solely on preparing for interviews rather than actively applying for jobs. However, I soon realized that the more interviews I attended, the better I understood the requirements of the roles and what employers were looking for. This experience significantly improved my performance in subsequent interviews.

There were times when I felt disheartened by rejections, but I found solace in travel. I balanced my job search by applying for jobs two or three days a week and exploring new places to keep my spirits high. I also utilized university and central library as a quiet space to focus on applications, which helped me avoid distractions.

It took me three months from the start of my job search to secure a position. During this period, I quit my part-time jobs to focus entirely on my career transition into data roles. I advise anyone in a similar situation to prioritize their long-term career goals over short-term earnings. If financial needs are pressing, consider working part-time for a couple of days a week while dedicating the rest of your time to job applications and interviews. This balanced approach can help you stay on track toward your desired career path."

One of my favorite experiences in my role has been working with SQL and Power BI to analyze finance-related data. I find immense satisfaction in uncovering insights and trends through data manipulation and visualization. The role has also offered a great work-life balance, which has been incredibly important for my overall well-being. Additionally, the continuous learning opportunities in this job keep me engaged and motivated. Every day presents a new challenge or a chance to expand my knowledge, which I truly enjoy.

The most challenging part of my graduate journey was juggling multiple responsibilities while navigating the job search process. Balancing my studies and dissertation work with part-time jobs in a warehouse and as a customer assistant in stores to meet my financial needs was demanding. Additionally, I faced the stress of searching for new housing as my room contract ended just before the submission of my dissertation. Initially, I lacked confidence and focused too much on preparing for interviews rather than actively applying for jobs, which slowed my progress. Rejections were tough to handle, but I learned to use them as learning experiences. Despite these challenges, I developed resilience and perseverance, ultimately securing a role that aligns with my career goals.

My advice for current students and recent graduates:

1. Enjoy Your University Days: Make the most of your time at the University of Liverpool. Cherish the moments with friends, attend parties, and participate in campus activities. These days are unique and irreplaceable, so create lasting memories while you can.

2. Start Applying Early and Network: Begin applying for jobs during your dissertation period. Connect with a diverse group of people to understand the different job demands in the market. Use career pages, and I found success applying through CV Library and Total Jobs. Ensure your resume aligns well with the job descriptions. Building a strong network can provide valuable insights and opportunities.

3. Focus on Relevant Experience: Tailor your job search to roles related to your field of study. I concentrated on gaining experience rather than looking for sponsorships immediately. Matching your resume to job descriptions and demonstrating relevant skills will increase your chances of landing a role that aligns with your career goals. Most of the interviews I attended focused on competency and behavioral questions. Prepare a few scenarios based on your life and past job experiences that you can easily match to these questions. This preparation will help you confidently respond to interview questions and showcase your suitability for the role."
