Kuldeep Singh Naga is a Class of 2023 MSc Business Analytics and Big Data graduate who is now working as a Data Associate at BODII in Liverpool.

How did you hear about your role and why or how did you decide to apply for it?

I love attending start-up events around the city and meeting new people. One day, while at a start-up event in Liverpool, I had a conversation with the founder of BODII. Later, they reached out to me on LinkedIn, saying they were looking for a Data and Machine Learning Associate and asked if I would be interested in having a chat. This opportunity aligned perfectly with my interests and career goals, so I decided to apply.

How did you get to where you are now?

I got to where I am now through a combination of strategic networking, proactive involvement in relevant events, and the support of key individuals. My journey began with a passion for attending start-up events, where I enjoyed meeting new people and learning about emerging trends. It was at one of these events that I met the founder of BODII. Our conversation led to a LinkedIn message from them, inviting me to discuss a potential role as a Data and Machine Learning Associate.

Throughout this process, my motivation to immerse myself in the start-up ecosystem and my eagerness to learn played a crucial role. Additionally, the support and encouragement from my network, including professors, friends, and peers, were invaluable. They provided guidance and helped me stay focused on my goals. The combination of these experiences and support systems ultimately led me to my current position.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

One of my favourite experiences as part of my role at BODII was participating in a collaborative project with a diverse team of individuals. We worked together to develop a comprehensive business strategy for a BODII, integrating various aspects such as market research, financial planning, product development, and raising funding. This experience not only allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to a practical scenario but also helped me understand the intricacies of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving in a real-world context. The sense of accomplishment and the skills I gained from this project were truly invaluable.

What has been the most challenging part of your graduate journey?

The most challenging part of my graduate journey was managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Juggling part-time jobs, searching for full-time employment, and adapting to life in a new country while keeping up with my studies were incredibly demanding. Balancing these commitments required strong time management, resilience, and adaptability. Despite the difficulties, this experience taught me invaluable lessons in prioritization and perseverance, and it ultimately made me more resilient and resourceful.

What are your Top 3 tips for current students and graduates?

  1. Start Your Job Search Early: Begin your job search well before you graduate. This allows you to explore different opportunities, tailor your applications, and network effectively. Early preparation can significantly reduce the stress of job-hunting post-graduation.

  2. Participate in Extracurricular Events: Take part in business challenges, hackathons, and other employability events that UoL organise. These experiences offer practical skills, expose you to real-world problems, and provide excellent networking opportunities. They complement your academic learning and can set you apart from other candidates.

  3. Learn to Cook and Eat Home-Cooked Meals: Cooking your meals not only helps you maintain a healthy diet but also saves money. Learning to cook can be a relaxing and rewarding skill that contributes to your overall well-being, especially during busy and stressful times.
