I Got Hired: Nuclear Safety Engineer

Posted on: 4 January 2023 by Richard Finch in Graduate stories

Natasha Khan is a BSc Physics Class of 2021 graduate who is currently working as a Nuclear Safety Engineer at Mott MacDonald.

HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

After completing my degree I worked for just under a year in the Charity Sector. I saw my current role advertised on Linkedin. At the time of the interview for my current role, I was working as a Climate Action Intern with an organisation I had volunteered with previously. This role provided me with additional skills, experience and connections to help with my personal and professional development.

YOUR FAVOURITE EXPERIENCE AS PART OF YOUR ROLE?

It is great to be working on interesting and varied projects collaboratively.

THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR GRADUATE JOURNEY?

Feeling demotivated after not hearing back from organisations that I’d applied to for a while, and facing rejection early on in the process. Don’t feel disheartened by rejection, and ask for feedback from organisations if you can.

TOP THREE TIPS FOR OTHER STUDENTS?

Research organisations, opportunities and companies before you begin applying. This will help you to understand company culture and what their values are so that you can see if it will be the right fit for you, and also help when you are making your application.

Practice psychometric tests on websites prior to that stage in the application process. The Careers & Employability team provide free access to Graduates First where you can practice online tests. Their Career Coaches can also help you to prepare for this stage of the recruitment process.

Don’t be afraid to message individuals on LinkedIn who are in roles you may be interested in & working for organisations you’re interested in to ask about their role and what their day to day looks like.
