I Got Hired: Journal Specialist

Chloë Radcliffe is a class of 2021 Microbiology graduate, now working as a Journal Specialist at Frontiers Media Ltd.

How did you get to where you are now?

I graduated from university with a lot of uncertainty about my career goals. Though I loved my course, I was admittedly disastrous in the lab, and I wasn't sure if a 'hands on' career in science was the right path for me. Through spending many hours scouring job sites for inspiration, I eventually happened upon vacancies within the scientific publishing industry, and I had what I can only describe as a 'lightbulb moment'. To me, pursuing a career within scientific publishing was the perfect opportunity to combine both the knowledge and understanding of microbiology acquired during my degree with the interpersonal skills developed throughout my years working in customer services alongside my studies. After doing a lot of research and familiarising myself with the industry, I decided to take the leap and begin the application process, eventually landing an offer for my current role.

What has been your best experience as part of your role?

The most exciting part of my role has been the opportunity to engage with leading researchers in the field, and be at the forefront of the latest scientific innovation. An experience that stands out is being able to attend the 'Frontiers Forums' which aim to provide a platform for visionary thinkers to discuss science-led solutions to global challenges that we face today. Being able to hear Nobel Prize winner Dr. Jennifer Doudna discuss the CRISPR health revolution was such an amazing opportunity.

What are your top tips for other students and graduates?

  1. Think outside the box. Having a clear vision for your career after you graduate is brilliant, but try to keep an open mind. Sometimes your dream job can be one you never expected, and you don't want to limit yourself too early!
  2. Tailor your applications. It's tempting to send out hundreds of applications to maximise your chances of securing a role, but in reality there's so many others doing the exact same. Investing more time into curating your applications to emphasise your suitability for the roles you apply for will be a lot more productive.
  3. Don't let comparison bring you down. Easier said than done, especially when you scroll through social media like LinkedIn and you're flooded with career successes and incredible achievements. Whilst it can be motivating to hear of other people's graduate experiences, constantly comparing yourself to others will just make you miserable. Try to focus on your own journey, and remember that each person's graduate experience will look different and that's okay!
