Laura graduated BSc Hons Psychology degree from the University of Liverpool. She is currently working as a Client Services Director at Jaywing PR.
What has been your best experience while studying your course at the University of Liverpool?
I loved my experience studying at the University of Liverpool, and it's hard to pick just one experience, but ultimately, I met best friends for life during my time there, and got to live in an amazing city for three years, all whilst studying a subject I loved. I would do it all over again if I could!
Which aspects of your course do you think have been the most beneficial to your career development?
I studied Psychology knowing that I wanted to work in PR, and having an understanding of people is hugely beneficial to my every day role. I didn't realise that my Statistics modules would end up being so useful for me though - we undertake a lot of research for clients, so having an understanding of how to analyse data has been really useful.
Can you please share an insight into your current role and if this was supported by your time at the University of Liverpool?
I'm currently Client Services Director at Jaywing PR in Leeds - as I studied Psychology, it wasn't directly related to a career path in PR, but I found that all aspects of the course in some way prepared me for working at a PR agency. My day to day involves looking after our team and being a key point of contact for all clients - leading on strategic approach for both PR and digital marketing, working to generate creative ideas, and ensuring we deliver tangible results for our clients. No day in PR is ever the same though!
Do you have any top tips to share with future and current students?
If you're looking to work in PR, or any area of marketing, make sure to take the time to find work experience whenever you can. I did work experience at an agency in the summer before my third year, and also between exams and graduation - having this on my CV helped me to land my first job as an Account Executive. It may be hard to give up time during your summers, but it can really be worth it.
What is the first thing that you think of when you think of the University of Liverpool?
My best friends! And also, the beautiful city and surroundings - I love visiting Liverpool now, and still do almost ten years after I graduated. I feel very lucky that I got to study in a city I loved - I moved to Liverpool from London, so it was a big change, but now I live in Leeds, so I never went back down south!
