Expertise
The Small Animal Teaching Hospital (SATH) is a state-
of-the-art multidisciplinary referral hospital that sees more
than 10,000 appointments per year. The hospital has
specialist vets in anaesthesia, cardiology, dermatology,
diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology,
oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
SATH has excellent facilities, including CT and MRI
scanners, a linear accelerator and a gait analysis
laboratory. Our motto is ‘Caring through clinical
excellence’ and our driving motivation is to provide
excellent patient care.
The Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital (PLEH),
meanwhile, offers a referral service to horse vets
throughout the country. We have experts in equine
orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, medicine (including
cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, oncology
and ophthalmology), and fertility/reproduction. As well
as treating horses we gather clinical data from cases to
further understand equine medical conditions and
develop new treatment techniques. The key role of the
hospital is to provide veterinary clinical services to
patients, their owners and our referring veterinarians.
In both of these animal hospitals we carry out ethically
approved clinical research projects to benefit patients and
improve animal welfare. Our clinical knowledge covers
many therapeutic areas. The Small Animal Teaching
Hospital, for example, has particular experience in
cardiology, arthritis, obesity and chemotherapy. We are
also studying ways to improve the safety of anaesthesia
and antibiotic use in skin disease.
Our veterinary research dovetails with many of the
human-focused projects of the University and we
collaborate to share expertise and knowledge and
develop human and animal applications. We have had
several successful projects working with drug companies
to trial new therapeutics.
Small Animal Teaching Hospital and Philip Leverhulme
Equine Hospital clinicians provide advice to primary care
veterinarians on how to manage complex cases. We also
run formal continuing professional development (CPD)
programmes and workshops for vets and ensure that our
research findings are disseminated to the wider practicing
community.
