Expertise
Our research explores how the human brain adapts
to different language learning environments. We have
experience applying numerous research methodologies
in this domain and have developed a variety of tools and
assessment frameworks for related studies.
We have particular expertise in the development of
theoretical unified models of language development
across different language learning environments. We
have also developed culture-free language assessment
tools that can be used across Western and non-Western
(
especially Asian) cultures.
Our work helps to inform social and economic policy on
the implication of language barriers to migration and other
forms of transnational mobility.

Expertise
The University has well-established expertise in the
study of diaspora, mobility and travel. Researchers have
particular strengths in analysing and assessing the
impact that cross-cultural mixing and movement have
had throughout history and continue to have today in the
evolution of language, politics, philosophy, religion and
social and economic development.
We offer extensive expertise across a range of disciplines
in the humanities and social sciences in the areas of
diasporas, migration and mobility. With cultural partners
in the region and beyond, we explore the processes and
manifestations of travel and migration in the Mediterra-
nean and Atlantic worlds, from the ancient period to the
present day.
Our work provides important evidence for the
development of immigration and asylum policies in
the UK, Spain and the EU. We explore the problems
and challenges which governments face in the areas
of migration management and the policing of human
trafficking and forced labour. Findings from our research
have been taken up by a range of professionals at
national, European and international levels: policymakers
and government officials, those working in think-tanks
and research organisations, government research
organisations, the NGO sector and charities.
Our studies are also supported by the Centre for the
Study of International Slavery, the Research Institute
of Latin American Studies and the Centre for Port and
Maritime History.
The Centre for the Study of International Slavery
contributes to the understanding of slavery and its
legacies, fostering research and debate in this field.
The Centre, a partnership between the University and
National Museums Liverpool, works with
other universities and organisations to develop
scholarly and public activities related to historical and
modern-day slavery.
Our work helps to raise awareness of the
persistence of slavery and how it can be eradicated;
we encourage debate about attitudes towards
freedom, race, ethnicity, tolerance, respect and
citizenship. We are also actively engaged in
projects looking at how the story of slavery is
being interpreted and memorialised.
