Aligned with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences' PGR Strategy and the University Strategy 2031, our postgraduate research programme in the School of the Arts (SotA) is committed to educating the next generation of researchers. We are dedicated to equipping our PGRs with outstanding intellectual skills, empowering them to tackle global challenges in the creative sector.
Application process and requirements
The School of the Arts’ distinctive postgraduate research degrees (including MPhil and PhD) cover a wide range of research areas across the five departments: Architecture, Communication and Media, English, Music and Philosophy. The Departments of Communication and Media, English, Music, and Philosophy also offer Masters by Research (MRes) programmes.
Throughout your research studies, the SotA Research and Impact Team, along with your supervisors and research groups, will provide dedicated support. We offer a range of excellent training opportunities at the University, Faculty, School, and Department levels, which will be communicated to you regularly. Additionally, our PGR Support Fund is available on a competitive basis to help support your academic activities beyond the University.

Liverpool School of the Arts Doctoral Award (LADA) |
We are thrilled to offer the Liverpool School of the Arts Doctoral Awards (LADA) annually to high-quality prospective PGR students. Applications to LADA usually open around February or March. |
AHRC: North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP) |
The University of Liverpool is part of the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP) which has been awarded over £12 million by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to train a new generation of skilled researchers. |
ESRC: North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) |
The North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) is the largest of fifteen DTPs in the UK, created by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). |
University of Liverpool Scholarships and Funding |
The University offers several competitive scholarships, such as the Duncan Norman Research Scholarship and the John Lennon Memorial Scholarship, among others. |
Funded PhDs and Studentships |
Occasionally, there are pre-defined PhD projects that come with funding attached (studentships). Studentships are advertised as and when they are available. Search for studentships currently open for application. |
