Tom Nicholls

I specialise in computational political communication and gets most excited by work at the intersection of at the intersection of politics, news, public policy, and the online world. My main research interests include the analysis of news texts using computational methods and the development of new methods for studying political behaviour online. A current focus of research is developing new methods for automatically extracting media frames from large corpora of news articles. Current research projects include ‘Banks, popular backlash, and the post-crisis politics of financial regulation (Banklash)’ in collaboration with Professor Pepper Culpepper (University of Oxford) and his team. Bringing together political economy, behavioural research and policy studies, Banklash studies the mutual feedback loops linking post-crisis regulation, public opinion, and the media coverage that mediates between citizens and governments in all democracies.
