What do you enjoy most about the course, and why?
I really enjoy the studio culture of the course. Since my first year, I have loved working in the studio, where I have met many friends. The School provides a great environment, including dedicated studio spaces and workshops that are accessible throughout the day. Being in the same space as my classmates allows us to discuss our work, critique each other’s designs, and continuously improve.
Can you tell us about an exciting project you have completed on your course?
One of the most exciting projects I worked on was the Alan Vaughan Richards Archive, a summer research internship with the Head of the School of Architecture. Along with two classmates, I recreated the house of Alan Vaughan Richards, a British-Nigerian architect, as a digital model, which we then 3D printed and assembled in real life. During the process, we had the opportunity to meet the architect’s daughter and explore a collection of his original architectural drawings. It was an incredible experience that combined research, digital modelling, and hands-on making.
Can you tell us about the teaching methods?
The teaching is mainly focused on the studio module, with two lecture-based modules each semester. These lecture modules provide a wealth of knowledge and inspiration, which help inform the studio work. Since the studio module takes up most of my self-study time, it’s great that the coursework across different modules often interrelates and builds upon each other. The tutors are very supportive, and some of them work in practice, offering valuable insights into the real profession. Their guidance has helped me develop my studio projects in a more professional way.
What extra-or co-curricular activities do you take part in, and how do these affect your student experience?
In my first year, I joined a football team for the campus league. Even though we lost all our matches, I made a lot of great friends. Being part of the team really helped me settle into university life and feel more comfortable in a new country.
If you could go back, what advice would you have given yourself before going to University?
I would tell myself to talk more to my classmates from the start. I only started making friends towards the end of my second year, and I wish I had done so earlier, as it would have made my university experience even better.
