A lecture at the University of Genova to celebrate Stirling's Centenary (1924-2024)
Dr Marco Iuliano will give a lecture on James Stirling at the event Concrete Visions: a symposium dedicated to the critical analysis of brutalist architecture, where students, PhD candidates, and researchers are invited to collaborate and discuss the legacy of brutalism and its future (if there is one). The symposium is structured in two parts:
The first part, "from concrete to paper", will feature researchers as the main participants, producing a full paper on Brutalism, focusing on built architectural works. To achieve this, we suggest that applicants select the projects discussed by Reyner Banham in his work The New Brutalism: Ethic or Aesthetic.
The second part will involve students in a workshop to design and build a model based on the essays produced during the first part. The challenge will be to shape a model that symbolically and abstractly represents the assigned projects and the theoretical perspectives of the papers.
The exhibition will showcase the models, offering not only a moment of aesthetic contemplation of the artefacts but, above all, a cultural exchange among students, researchers, and faculty as they reflect on the work produced throughout the week.
On the 30th of September, 1st and 2nd of October, three lectures will be held featuring national and international guests, including professors and professionals, in the Aula Benvenuto of the Department of Architecture and Design.
The event will conclude on October 5th in the triangular medieval cloister of the Museum of Sant’Agostino, where an exhibition will be set up, followed by a discussion on the results of the presented works. In the afternoon, the event will conclude with a walking lecture by Jacopo Baccani at the Giardini di Plastica.
