The Liverpool School of Architecture is dedicated to sustainable architecture research and education, focusing on energy-efficient building practices, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability. Our CRESTA (Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability in Architecture) MSc programme integrates leading sustainability research into its teaching and curriculum, preparing students to advance sustainable architectural practices.

As part of the programme and the module Sustainable Environmental Design (ARCH734) led by Dr Mohammadpourkarbasi, CRESTA students had the opportunity to work on a retrofitting proposal for Birkenhead Town Hall, a Grade II* listed building. This hands-on experience allowed them to explore the complexities of retrofitting historic structures. They assessed energy efficiency standards and selected appropriate approaches, achieving notable energy-efficient retrofit standards such as AECB and Passivhaus retrofit (EnerPHit).

Students presented their project outcomes to the Wirral Council Climate Emergency and Regeneration team: Shruthi Prabhu, Masirah Khan, Rupali Gauravaram, Nassim Sabir, Riddhi Sawant, Gabriel Firmino, Abdulaziz Alzuriq, Alnassor, Noora

They navigated restrictions and policies related to listed buildings and used advanced tools like EnviMET for microclimate analysis, dynamic thermal simulation modelling, and One Click LCA for lifecycle carbon assessment. The Wirral Council Climate Emergency team commended their work for its quality and depth.

CRESTA ensures that students, primarily from architectural backgrounds, are well-prepared to tackle environmental challenges and pursue diverse career opportunities. Graduates have secured positions in esteemed firms such as FCB Studios, Cundall, Ecospheric, SRE Ltd, and various councils. The skills and knowledge gained from this programme distinguish them in roles focused on green building design, energy-efficient architecture, urban planning, and sustainable development consultancy.
