BA3 Studio 5 Frankfurt Field Trip

BA3 Studio 5 recently went on a field trip to Frankfurt, Germany (6-8 February). During a three day tour de force students and staff visited and studied 12 museums and conducted site investigations for their semester two project for the extension of the Museum der Weltkulturen.

The museums visited were: Museum für Angewandte Kunst; Museum der Weltkulturen; Deutsches Architektur Museum; Museum für Kommunikation; Deutsches Filmmuseum; Städel Museum; Schirn Kunsthalle; Museum für Moderne Kunst; Historisches Museum; Museum für Vor - und Frühgeschichte (Archäologisches Museum); Jüdisches Museum; Caricatura Museum.

On day 1 we were kindly met by Dr Celine Deliss, the director of the Museum der Weltkulturen, who introduced us to the aims and working methods of the museum. Subsequently we were able to see a recent example of the museum's working practices.

Over the course of our trip we experienced and studied a multitude of approaches to museum and exhibition design. The students were able to compare first hand different architectures such as the spatial bravura of Hollein's MMK, Behnisch's delicate transparency, Unger's house in the house, Richard Meier's formal incorporating of the Villa Metzler, and BJSS' large scale urban intervention for the Schirn Kunsthalle.

In addition we witnessed a fight of Gladiators outside the archeological museum, and sampled local fare such as Handkäs mit Musik, Äppelwoi and Haspel mit Kraut!
